Upper Kings River Fishout – April 1 thru 4, 2010
by Rene Blanquies
The Upper Kings area is beautiful this time of the year. Flowers everywhere, great weather and a freestone river. What more could you want for a fishout. The annual March fishout will be held the first weekend in April at the Kings River east of Fresno at the end of Pine Flat Reservoir. We will be camping above the Bailey Bridge on the north side. To get there continue past Kitch Flat Campground and across the Bailey Bridge, the second bridge heading up river. Turn right and continue up along the river going over a rise and down. There will be a large dirt mound on the left and a vault toilet. There are several campsites on the right with fire pits. The road can be a little rugged for cars and long RV's from the bailey bridge to the camp site but should be passable. O
We will be fishing for wild rainbow trout. This is a primitive campground, but there is one pit toilet and lots of trees (over 100 feet from the high water mark of the river). You should be able to make it this far with a light 2-wheel drive vehicle. We have taken tent trailers into this area with no problem. There are fire grills, picnic tables, and vault toilets. There is no piped water so you will have to bring your own or bring a filter. Leashed pets are permitted. The nearest Hotel/Motel is about 2 hours away.
There are three fisheries here if you count the Bass in Pine Flat Reservoir, the quiet saurian Kings River (weather permitting not to hot not to cold) and Black Rock reservoir. Black Rock reservoir is an evening fishery for float tubes and is very cold - did I say very cold. The road to it is not for the faint of heart. It's an Indiana Jones experience but with out the villain and the girl (unless you bring your own) you can chose.
On Friday night there will be corned beef and cabbage dinner served from about 6 PM until about 10 PM. A Continental Breakfast, Motel 6 style, will be provided on Saturday morning and bag lunches. The meal on Saturday night will be fajitas, meat and vegetarian style. Sunday will be the same boring blueberry or plain pancake breakfast or a surprise I haven't decided yet and a bag lunch. A small amount of bottled water and sodas will be provided. You are encouraged to bring a better quality of the beverage of your choice, lots of firewood and drinking water. Don't forget your lawn chairs, warm clothes, and in the event of rain, rain gear. The cost for the fishout is about $40 per person, $10 per kid. Kids at heart are still $40. For your 40 bucks you will get the aforementioned beer, wine, & food .
Sign ups will be at the March meeting. See Rene Blanquies or call 408-377-7407 or email email@example.com.
