I decided to take the plunge into fly tying. Will register for the class next month of course, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone has a favorite brand of thread.

Specifically I wanted to try my hand at woolly bugger-like things (freshwater, #8 to 10) and surf perch flies (I have a clouser-like pattern in mind, #6 and perhaps a bit larger or smaller). I have a feeling that means two types of thread ... or maybe not.

Anyway, thanks for any thoughts on the subject !

Threads need not be overthought.
size 3/0 or 6/0, waxed or unwaxed, from Danville or Uni, among others, would work just fine.
Stay away from exotics (Kevlar, gel, etc.) until you get into exotic projects.

If 'twere me- for the sorts of flies you're planning, I'd use a 3/0, waxed, nylon.
Black is a standard default and goes with almost everything, but I also enjoy different colors to match or contrast.
