Programs Info

Bob Laskodi will be presenting “Alaska on the Fly – On the Cheap”, a discussion on how you can fish Alaska for about $175 a day and catch the biggest trout of your life. The program will focus on the road accessible waters on The Kenai Peninsula and discuss the locations, methods, and techniques used to catch trophy rainbow trout and char, silver salmon, and steelhead.

056b  Be advised in advance that this program contains some serious “fish porn” that will leave you drooling and ready to go to Alaska! Bob is an Alaskan veteran, fishing the various waters of the expansive state since the 1980’s. He has fished everything from the deluxe fly out lodges, to wilderness backcountry camps, to the roadside waters, and loves every minute he can spend in the beautiful state. Bob’s pictures have been published in several Alaska publications, most recently being featured as a contributing photographer to Gunnar Pedersen’s fantastic guidebook, “The Alaska Roadside Angler’s Guide” published in 2007.

Bob has been fly fishing since the 1970’s and after retiring from a “real job”, owned and operated a retail fly fishing store, Fly Anglers Unlimited in Pleasanton, California. Currently, Bob is active in his local fly club, Flycasters of San Jose, and serves on it's Board of Directors.

Our August meeting will feature the very well known speaker and Fly Fisher, Lance Gray.

Lance started fly fishing and tying flies when he was eight with his father, and the rest is history.  At thirteen he started tying flies commercially and at seventeen he was working at Powell's Fly Shop in Chico. Lance guided, tied flies, and fished everywhere.  In 1993 Lance started Saltwater Innovations, a company which produced saltwater products including flies like Lance's Crystal Poppers, Raghead Crabs and the KO Charlie series.

Lance's saltwater flies are available at Solitude Fly Company.

Lance conducts presentations at the ISE shows and many fly fishing clubs.  This month we are very lucky and happy to host Lance.

Lance also guides and educates fly fishers about the sport.

Lance will be presenting his program  "Steelheading the Feather River"

Personally, fishing for Steelhead is one of my favoritess, so I am very much looking forward to this presentation.

The lecture portion of this presentation covers history, angling information, access points, fly fishing techniques, flies and much more!

If time allows, I'll see if Lance can show us some rigging and flies before the meeting, so come early.  Lance usually has handouts on the presentations as well.  Don't forget to grab one for yourself, ME FIRST...   :)))

See you there

Hogan

In June we have yet another great program from another speaker who I don't think we've met before...Hogan Brown.  Hogan will be presenting his program "Northern CA Largemouth Bass Fishing, A Practical Approach"

Hogan began fly fishing from an early age virtually growing up on the banks of the North Fork and Lower Yuba rivers.  He began hitch hiking the 5 miles from his house to the Lower Yuba River with a fly rod in hand in Junior High school.

He has chased trout and steelhead in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta provinces in Canada.

Far from being a trout snob, Hogan has spent considerable time fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass and readily admits to enjoying catching carp and catfish on a fly!

Hogan has become one of the leading innovators in warm water fly fishing in Northern California.  Just as passionate about fly tying, Hogan has developed a unique approach to tying bass, carp, steelhead, and trout flies with the sierra foothills and the CA central valley as his testing ground.  Hogan blends many different styles with his own unique approach to create innovative flies for catching bass, carp, steelhead nd trout.

Hogan is a contract tier for Idylwildw Fly Co. and has over 24 patterns out through them.

Hogan began guilding the North Fork and Lower Yuba Rivers when he graduated from high school and eventually relocated to Chico to attend Chico State.  He is a 2005 graduate of Chico State with a degree in Social Science and a minor in Psychology.  After that, he graduated from National University in 2006 with a single subject teaching credential and a Masters in Education.  Residing in Chico, after 10 years of full time guiding he now teaches at Hamilton Union High School and guides the Lower Yuba River, Lower Sacramento River, Trinity River and Feather River along with various bass and carp water and small streams and rivers outside of Chico during the summer and on weekends.

Hogan is also a published author with articles appearing in both Northwest Fly Fishing and Southwest Fly Fishing Magazine along with Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine.

He is also a FFF certified casting instructor.

Don't miss this.  It is sure to be a great program.

Join Steve on a journey through the badlands of Eastern Oregon in pursuit of trophy Brown Trout.  This blue ribbon fishery offers anglers unique opportunities to stock wild Brown Trout with a back drop of stunning high desert scenery.  A reliable year round fishery that consistently produces Brown Trout exceeding 20 inches.  Possibly the West's best kept secret.

Steve’s Bio:

Steve was born and raised in Stockton, California, where he lives today with his wife and youngest son.  Growing up in a fishing family his passion for angling began at a very early age.  His father, Carl, helped pioneer the Monterey Bay blue shark fishery in the early sixties.  Steve, a fly fisher at heart, began to develop salt water fly fishing strategies and by the mid eighties, Steve owned his own boat and was guiding for a number of off shore species.  Steve’s reputation as a guide and knowledge of the central coast salt water fishing scene earned him a spot on the Budweiser national fishing team, and attracted national sponsors such as Sea Ray boats and Mercury out-board motors. Major sponsorships gave Steve the opportunity to present his slide shows and seminars throughout California.  Currently, Steve is owner/operator and head guide for The High Plain’s Drifters Guide Service, devoting most of his summers to exploring the remote regions of Eastern Oregon and Washington; taking the roads less traveled exploring rivers and streams often overlooked by the general angling population.  His programs, Bronze Back Fever, and Owyhee River Journal document the trials, tribulations, joys and heart aches encountered when fishing remote locations.  In spite of himself, every now and then, he stumbles onto some great fishing!

Hello fellow FLYCASTERS.  Well, the April meeting is fast approaching.  We have an excellent program scheduled for April.  If you like to, or want to know how to..."Flyfish in the Surf"...DO NOT miss this meeting.

Our guest speaker in April is Robert Ketley.  Robery has many years of experience fishing the surf and has an excellent presentation on it!

Robert was born in London, England at beginning of the swinging 60's. Parents were both "hip" artists.  He started fishing at age 5 on the Thames in London and cast his first fly on an English lake at 11.

His home is now in Santa Cruz and he works for the City of Watsonville as an environmental engineer.  He also runs a small consulting business specializing in storm water issues.

Robert writes regularly for California Fly Fisher and occasionally for other magazines on a variety of fly fishing topics.

On weekends, you will usually find him waist deep in the Monterey Bay surf in pursuit of perch, stripers and halibut.

Robert is not the world's greatest fly fisherman, but feels that 11th best overall isn't too bad.....

See you there.
